Many of us probably immediately think of spa appointments, vacations, or a relaxing bubble bath when we think of self-love. Sure, those are all pleasant things. But when I think of self-love, my mind goes a step further.
For me, self-love means recognizing when I'm adopting unkind perspectives toward myself. It's about noticing my own stressful, depressing thoughts about myself. Self-love is an internal process where I learn to accept myself instead of accusing or pushing myself. It's about kindness in my thinking.
No matter where you travel, your mind always comes with you. If your mind continues to produce stressful thoughts, no matter how relaxing the environment is—it's all turmoil inside. That's why self-love is primarily an inner work. It goes so far that a monk in a cave or someone like Nelson Mandela in prison could be completely at peace with themselves and offer only forgiveness to their perceived enemies, while someone sitting in the most posh penthouse can depress themselves with stressful thoughts about themselves.
Self-love is more than just external relaxation. By questioning our thoughts and learning to treat ourselves with kindness and acceptance, because we increasingly meet ourselves without our stressful stories, we can experience more and more self-love and acceptance.
I invite you to embark on this path of self-love with curiosity and openness. If you're interested, please feel free to request a free initial coaching session with me.
