Self-love beyond the bubble bath

Promote acceptance and friendly thinking

Many of us probably immediately think of spa appointments, vacations, or a relaxing bubble bath when we think of self-love. Sure, those are all pleasant things. But when I think of self-love, my mind goes a step further.

Self-love is an inner journey

For me, self-love means recognizing when I'm adopting unkind perspectives toward myself. It's about noticing my own stressful, depressing thoughts about myself. Self-love is an internal process where I learn to accept myself instead of accusing or pushing myself. It's about kindness in my thinking.

Your spirit accompanies you everywhere

No matter where you travel, your mind always comes with you. If your mind continues to produce stressful thoughts, no matter how relaxing the environment is—it's all turmoil inside. That's why self-love is primarily an inner work. It goes so far that a monk in a cave or someone like Nelson Mandela in prison could be completely at peace with themselves and offer only forgiveness to their perceived enemies, while someone sitting in the most posh penthouse can depress themselves with stressful thoughts about themselves.

How do I achieve friendlier perspectives?

  • Self-observation: Start by observing your thoughts. Which ones are negative, accusatory, or self-critical? Where do you tell yourself stories about how you should be further along, how you're not good enough, how your security is threatened, etc.? Where do you tell yourself that your worth depends on something external or on something you've or haven't achieved? (Hint: Your value is given and beyond all these ideas and evaluations)

  • Write down your stressful thoughts about yourself and examine them: In my experience, writing down stressful thoughts is an important step in becoming aware of how many stressful, fearful, and depressing stories I tell myself about myself (and others). As long as I believe these stories (even if only partially), they stand like a facade between me and the direct experience of my self-worth, self-love, and acceptance. Once I've identified these stressful thoughts and put them on paper, I can examine them using The Work by Byron Katie | Inquiry Based Stress Reduction. Hundreds of experiences from my own inner work have taught me that I've emerged from each 'examination' feeling freer, lighter, more peaceful, or clearer (I'll call it with more self-love).

  • Mindfulness and meditation: As you become more mindful and alert, you may notice where you're believing stressful thoughts about yourself, be patient with yourself. Just as we may have practiced all of our stressful thoughts about ourselves since childhood, we can now practice letting go of these stressful thoughts one by one. Every step toward greater freedom and self-love is worth it.

Final thoughts

Self-love is more than just external relaxation. By questioning our thoughts and learning to treat ourselves with kindness and acceptance, because we increasingly meet ourselves without our stressful stories, we can experience more and more self-love and acceptance.

I invite you to embark on this path of self-love with curiosity and openness. If you're interested, please feel free to request a free initial coaching session with me.
