In this episode of the Effortless Creation and Insight Coaching Podcast, we talk about how the fear of missing out can hold us back from living an effortless and fulfilling life. Let's explore together how we can free ourselves from this FOMO.
(Session worksheet below... 👇 )
Imagine your consciousness is like a giant movie screen on which everything you focus your attention on comes to life. You are the director, and you decide which films are shown on that screen. If you're constantly fixated on what's happening in other cinemas, you'll miss the film playing right now. But once you realize that you have control over which films you play on your screen, you'll be free of the fear of missing out and can fully concentrate on the latest blockbuster in your own cinema. Your consciousness is the ultimate movie theater, and you alone decide which film is playing.
I've learned that the fear of missing out arises from the stories I tell myself. These stories create a state of lack in my mind, regardless of whether that lack actually exists (spoiler: it doesn't). By challenging my stressful thoughts surrounding the idea that I might miss out (or that others might miss out) and becoming aware that I have everything I need in this moment, I can no longer fully believe the concept of "I'm missing out" and thus dissolve the fear of missing out.
Being freed from the fear of missing out gives me freedom from constant distraction, making it easier to appreciate the present moment and become aware of my inner fullness. It has enabled me to be authentic, trust my path, and be completely with myself. Furthermore, I can now invite what I truly want instead of worrying that things might not be better/more beautiful/more exciting somewhere else.
By dealing with the fear of missing out, I have experienced how liberating it is to live in presence and freedom from this fear.
Worksheet - Freedom from the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)
- Reflect on how the fear of missing out has influenced your daily life, your feelings, and your actions. Write it down.
- Write down the thought "I'm missing something right now." Then find a situation in which you believed that thought. Write down the situation. Then answer the following questions for yourself. in written formwhile reflecting/meditating on each of the questions.
- Ask yourself:
Question 1: - Is this true? (That you are missing something right now - in the situation in which you believe the thought?)
-> The answer here is either yes or no. If your answer is yes, go to question 2; if it's no, go to question 3.
Question 2: - Can you know with absolute certainty that this is true? (That you are missing something in the situation in which you believe the thought?)
-> The answer here is either yes or no.
Question 3: - How do you react? What happens when you believe this thought? (That you are missing something in the situation in which you believe the thought?)
Question 4: - Who or what would I be without the thought? (Who or what would you be without the thought "I'm missing something right now" - in the situation in which you believe the thought?)
- Focus your attention on your body, especially your feet. Feel the presence of your feet and observe how your perception changes when you consciously direct your attention to them.
- Understand the role of your attention in creating your reality. Consider how the awareness and presence you give to something gives it reality for you in your mind.
- Explore how the realization that you can't miss anything can free you from a state of lack.
- Consider how questioning and illuminating stressful thoughts can invite you to appreciate the present moment and recognize your abundance.
- Reflect on the effects of the exercises and insights on your emotional and mental state. How does freeing yourself from FOMO affect your life? What would your entire life be like if you never again believed the thought "I'm missing out on something"?
- Perceive what you have in this moment as a direct experience of feeling your being, and practice appreciation for the present moment and the abundance associated with it.
Good luck with these exercises! If you need further support, I invite you to listen to the podcast for further inspiration and sign up for a free appetizer coaching session with me (link below).
